Sometime last week, a particular thought kept ringing in my head and I thought it a good lesson to share. I had the opportunity of being an encouragement to a friend when this thought came to my head; "What or who you encourage, you know more about".
I remember when I was in secondary school and many of my classmates feared mathematics as a subject. One of our maths teacher came in one day and voiced out a statement I will never forget all my life. He said, "if you hate the teacher of any subject, you will never come to love the subject". Since then, it hit me, it's sometimes not about the subject but the teacher of the subject. Take a flash back at the days you were in school, did you excel in the subjects/courses you hated the teacher passionately? I am sure in most cases, your answer would be either a 'No' or 'Average'. If you encourage the teacher to teach you, he teaches his best and eventually you become a master in the subject and sooner or later, you will have no need of the teacher any more.
What is that thing you have been struggling to come to terms with lately? Your boss at work? That course at school? That new operating system at the office? Your girlfriend or boyfriend;wife or husband? May I suggest you choose to start giving more attention to 'loving' these things; start encouraging their place and role in your life. Quit frowning at every sight of them. I assure you, your attitude towards these things would determing how you measure up in or with them. If you are really keen to make things work, let your attitude be one that encourages them.

DeleteSimple but rings deep! With people, we sometimes get carried away with trying to "help" them fix the troubles in their lives that we forget to show genuine concern then get mad when they don't "appreciate" our efforts.

DeleteLol. for me its contradictory. In secondary school, like other students I didn't like my Physics teacher cos he was too pompous. Little wonder I sat for Physics twice in WAEC. But in higher institution I initially didn't like my Taxation/Valuation lecturer too, until we all saw the man's genuine love for his students... Guess what? He made the course easier than we thought.
ReplyDeleteMost teachers appear difficult, because they genuinely want to make sure they get all students to understand what they are trying to pass across. Truth is, if students come to this understanding and stop hating on them, the knowledge will find an easy path/medium to get to them as you ascertained in the second example. Thank you sir.

This piece has worked for me and it is very very true. I had a very annoying boss who i don't consider to be annoying anymore. I just gave her attention and now we have a good relationship.

ReplyDeleteWhat I have learnt so far in my life is that those things we usually think are too tough for us, when we face them head on and determine to, like you said, love them, we excel in them. A perfect example is always schoolwork. Moving on with the 'right attitude' has helped me so far in my studies.
......And at the end of every challenge, when we do excel, we can scream!!!"

Amazing article. Honestly i hated my maths teacher and it affected me back in high school. I'm inspired by the thought of giving people quality time cos people never confide or open up to you till they know how much you care.

DeleteI can really recall how I really hated maths when in college with this your post. But later on, I later found out that I was always relating well with the teachers that handle the subjects I was really good at. I always saw that maths teacher as complex as the mathematical problems he solved on the board.

ReplyDeleteThe strangest thing is I was thinking about this this past week, i.e. how the teacher makes a HUGE difference in whether you take an interest in a subject or not. You're very right. The subjects I loved had more to do with the teachers than the subject itself. It really made a difference. I also think that focusing on the areas you are interested in will help you not only master them, but in the process, you'll learn more about your own self. That change of attitude though is necessary. God bless you for sharing this.
I remember some courses that i failed in University. It was cos i didn't like the lecturers. Liking them always makes the difference.
